Last week a Senate committee killed a bill to retain all third graders who did not have sufficient reading skills. The bill, a favorite for Governor Susana Martinez, was blocked by a vote of 5-3 along party lines in the Senate Public Affairs Committee. However, a similar bill was easily approved by the Republican-controlled House and will also make its way to the Senate in the coming days or weeks. We spoke with Democratic Senator Mimi Stewart, who led the opposition to last week's bill by Republican Sen Gay Kernan of Hobbs.
