The National Trust for Historic Preservation last month bestowed a national award on northern New Mexico’s Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo for a project it undertook that saw the rehabilitation of old pueblo homes—some as old as 700-years around the plaza in the center of the Pueblo. Tomasita Duran, the Executive Director of the Pueblo’s Housing Authority, says the award for its Owe’neh Bupingeh Preservation Project, reflects historic preservation, community building and resourceful fundraising. |

As Christmas approaches, it’s easy—and sometimes even enjoyable-- to get caught up in the flurry of shopping and cooking and decorating. But in the deeper spirit of the holiday season, KSFR wanted to find out about holiday volunteer activities in Santa Fe. Reporter Mary Lou Cooper talked with Jane Egan, Communications Director of the Santa Fe Community Foundation. The Community Foundation is devoted to building healthy and vital communities in Santa Fe and the counties of Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Mora, Rio Arriba, San Miguel, and Taos.

Yesterday the Interstate stream commission voted to approve a diversion project along the Gila River. Many opponents of the plan have called the project a “billion dollar boondoggle” because of the associated costs. One of those opponents of the plan is former Interstate Stream commission Director Norm Gaum, who has widely criticized the plan for its lack of feasibility. He describes the birth of the plan which was first introduced by Senator Pete Dominici around the year 2000 with a chance for New Mexico to benefit from an associated passage of the Arizona Settlements Act. Gaum, at the time said that several previous dam attempts had failed before and therefore the money could be put to better use. |

Conversations about public lands and who should be managing them are increasing in the public arena and will most certainly play a part in the upcoming legislative session. Recently Garrett Veneklasen the Executive Director of the New Mexico Wildlife Federation wrote an opinion piece in the New Mexican about public access to land. We spoke to the avid hunter and fisherman about his views, particularly as we await the results of the election for Public Lands Commissioner, which should be confirmed by the end of the day today.

![]() Earlier this year, the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Carlsbad, NM– was shut down after a chemical reaction caused one of the barrels to rupture, exposing dozens of employees at the nation’s only underground waste repository to radiation contamination. Santa Fe New Mexican Journalist Stacy Matlock revealed earlier this month that the cause of the chemical reaction may have been due to the use of organic kitty litter as an absorbent. This past weekend, reporter Patrick Malone took that investigation one step further revealing that the lab may have known of the volatile chemical combination and sent the barrels to be stored at WIPP nonetheless. We spoke with Malone about the investigation and his findings. |

The City of Las Vegas, New Mexico, is getting lots of high-level attention lately. Earlier this month Governor Susana Martinez and the State Secretary for Tourism joined local elected officials and business leaders on the Plaza in Las Vegas to talk about the “revitalization” of one of NM’s most important historic towns.
As KSFR's Marion Cox reports, one reason for the excitement is the recent sale of The historic Castenada Hotel - a trackside Harvey House Hotel - and the refurbishing of the Plaza Hotel located on the Las Vegas Plaza. |
