Last week a Senate committee killed a bill to retain all third graders who did not have sufficient reading skills. The bill, a favorite for Governor Susana Martinez, was blocked by a vote of 5-3 along party lines in the Senate Public Affairs Committee. However, a similar bill was easily approved by the Republican-controlled House and will also make its way to the Senate in the coming days or weeks. We spoke with Democratic Senator Mimi Stewart, who led the opposition to last week's bill by Republican Sen Gay Kernan of Hobbs.

House members of the Public Affairs and Regulation Committee listened to five hours of testimony from New Mexicans on both sides of the issue of abortion on Friday, with the crowd spilling over into the halls outside the committee room well into the evening.  As KSFR’s Deborah Martinez reports, the bill, sponsored by Republican Yvette Herrell of Alamogordo, passed on a party-line vote.
